English Heritage: Castle Rising Castle
This splendid example of a medieval keep dates back to the 12th century, and it still sits within 20 acres of mighty earthworks. This is where Queen Isabella lived after the murder of her son, Edward II. It's a notably authentic Norman castle in that it offers nothing in the way of food, drink, disabled access or any other facilities apart from a gift shop and toilets.
The nearest town is Hunstanton, 10 miles away, but for tea and snacks, there are cafes and tea rooms in Castle Rising village. For shopping, King's Lynn is 15 miles away by the A1078 and King's Lynn station has the closest rail access, with a connecting bus service on routes CH Coasthopper, 10 and 35.
