English Heritage: Muncaster Castle
Muncaster Castle is set in 77 acres of woodland, surrounded by the Western Lake District fells. The historic house is known for being haunted but remains a lived-in family home after nine centuries. The Tapestry Room is a prime spot for this, with visitors often mentioning strange goings on such as footsteps and the sound of a crying child. For those interested, Muncaster offers one or two scientific ghost vigils every year which involves an overnight exploration of the castle and overnight ghost sits with paranormal specialists.
The historic house also hosts regular exhibitions and its 16th and 17th century furnishings, gardens, Hawk and Owl Centre and maze offer a great day out for families with children. Creeping Kate’s Café in the castle's former stables serves a range of small snacks and main meals. The Owl Garden Tea Room also offers hot and cold drinks, snacks, cakes and ice cream.
Muncaster Castle can be found close to Ravenglass. Parking is available and free all day. During the full season, adults can visit the castle, gardens, Hawk & Owl Centre and Maze for £14 and children for £7 (under 5s free). During the winter season, prices are halved.
