Lydford Castle is set near Dartmoor National Park and up river from the Lydford Gorge. It's significance as a medieval site can be seen in the layout of the town and the two castles. To the south, you'll find the earthworks of a Norman castle and near the centre, a 13th century tower keep. This was at one point a prison for particularly harsh punishments and continued to be in use until the 18th century.
The castle can be found in Lydford off A386, 8.5 miles south of Okehampton. It can also be reached by Beacon Bus 118 and Dartmoor Rover First bus service 187 (summer & Sun only). There is a free car park in the village opposite the Castle Inn.
Lydford Castle is free to visit and open any reasonable time during daylight hours.
