The Theatre Royal opened in 1792 so has a solid claim to being Scotland's oldest theatre. It was funded by subscribers, who included Robert Burns. It is category A listed.

It is run by the Guild of Players who acquired it in 1959.

It benefited from a substantial renovation which was completed in 2015.
