The Headgate Theatre was originally a chapel built in 1844.

The Theatre Arts Action Trust was set up in the 1990's to find a space for amateur theatre in Colchester and opened in 2000. It includes an auditorium with 87 seats, and a bar and studio upstairs.

The theatre has a thespian themed stained glass window by Gay Hutchings.
