A good deal of what's now St Albans was once Verulamium, the third largest city in Roman Britain (after Londinium and the mighty Camulodunum, now better known as Colchester and Rome's original capital of Britain.) The Verulamium Museum features recreated Roman rooms, hands-on activities, a video about the archaeological excavation of the city and mosaics and wall-paintings. There's also a well-preserved example of a Roman Hypocaust – basically, their version of under-floor heating – and a few minutes from the museum (but not actually part of it) are the remains of a Roman Theatre.

The museum’s services include regular family activities, a schools programme, access to its library, a free object identification service, lectures, work experience placements and volunteering opportunities.
