After being developed over 400 years from 1120–1530, St Mary's was restored between 1844–1876 under the supervision of Augustus Welby Pugin, his son E Welby Pugin, and Sir Gilbert Scott.
The west front is a fine example of late 14th century work, which may have influenced the Chapel of King's College, Cambridge.
