The Bowes Museum is a public art gallery and museum named after John Bowes and his wife Joséphine. They commisioned the purpose built building and spent much of their life collecting the core of the collection..
The museum has ceramics, silver, furniture, textiles, costumes and paintings. Pictures by El Greco, Goya, Canaletto, Fragonard and François Boucher, Glass by Émile Galléis is also included. A notable item is a 18th century silver swan.
There is on site parking and the museum is on walking distance of the centre of Barnard Castle.
