Turner Contemporary

Turner Contemporary opened in the current building in April 2011 though established as an institution under with founding Director, Victoria Pomery. It is in a prominent position on the seafront.

The building was originally to have been built to a design by architectural competition winner Snøhetta + Spence, but the proposal was abandoned and David Chipperfield Archtiects took over in July 2006.

The gallery is on the site of Mrs Booth’s guest house, where JMW Turner stayed.

The gallery will host the 2019 Turner Prize.
