Newmarket is known as the home of racing, and with good reason; horseracing has been going on here since the time of James I, and between the 18th and 19th centuries the King's/Queen's Plate was one of the most prestigious races in the country. Today, Newmarket's two courses – the Rowley Mile and the July Course – are owned by the Jockey Club and host numerous major meets, including the 1000 and 2000 Guineas Stakes and Falmouth Stakes. Newmarket hosts more group races than any other course in the country.
Newmarket offers a wide variety of hospitality packages, from light lunches and buffets to a visit to see legendary, now-retired thoroughbred Frankel, who lives at a nearby stud farm. The course can be booked for weddings, and during the summer months it hosts live music.
Newmarket station is served by lines to Cambridge and Ipswich, and road access is available via the A11 and A14. There is also a bus service to Bury St Edmunds station.
