The Vortex is all about jazz, having been named by Downbeat magazine as one of the world's top 150 jazz venues. Volunteer-led and non-profit, it hosts more than 400 performances per year of adventurous music; note that if you come here hoping for an evening of romantic background ivory-tinkling, you may be disappointed, as pianists here are as likely to pound the strings with their bare fists.

The Downstairs Bar offers cocktails named after classic jazz albums (its equivalent of a margarita is called an 'Ascension') as well as burgers, pasta and salads. The nearest Tube is Dalton Kingsland (Overground) and the closest bus routes are 67, 79, 149, 243 and 488.
