Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2017 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).

Comfortable, welcoming and bohemian, the Blue Chair feels sunny even on a rainy day. The artfully jumbled interior hosts regular events, slam poetry, live music and vinyl nights, the titular blue chair waiting in the corner to receive performers, while a generous BYOB policy takes care of the audience. A tight little menu eschews the soup and sandwiches route in favour of some good home cooking, macaroni cheese, quesadillas, hearty noodle soup and a range of handmade burgers, including some vegan patties, served with crispy chips and salad. Alongside the specials board, signature dishes include the Burns fritter, veggie haggis, tatties and neeps all rolled in beer batter, but the real stand out is the posh tottie, a baked potato with huge chunks of smoked haddock, smothered in smoky cheese sauce and topped with a poached egg. Home-baked cakes are served in huge slabs, like the hummingbird cake, with pecan nuts and moist, earthy sponge, and delicious cream cheese icing, but there are always vegan and gluten-free cakes and brownies on offer, too.

  • High point: Homebaking in generous slabs
  • Low point: Skooshy cream as a garnish for the cake
