The house was built for Sir Richard Martin (The Master of the Mint and three times Lord Mayor of London) in 1582. A private residence until 1889 when Sir Sidney Waterlow (another Mayor of London) gave the house to London County Council. Renovated after an extensive fire in 1963 and reopened to the public as an arts and education centre by Yehudi Menuhin in 1978.

Nearest London Underground station is Archway on the Northern Line. Buses 4, 10, 17, 41, 43, 134, 143, 210, 263, 271, C11 and W5 all stop near Lauderdale House.
