Originally it was called the Wakefield Opera House, it opened in 1894 and was designed by renowned theatre architect Frank Matcham.

The Theatre Royal annually hosts over 250 performances with touring shows, but also produces a pantomime every year, and Wakefield Youth Music Theatre productions.

The Creative Director is John Godber, writer of plays including Teechers, Bouncers, and Up ‘n’ Under and is home to the John Godber Company.

Development is underway on adjacent ground which will see a Centre of Creativity open in 2018 including a studio performance space, bar and other additional facilities.
