Making a virtue out of the time it takes to get a whisky distillery off the ground, since opening in the summer of 2013 Strathearn have brought out a range of gins which includes the Classic, Oaked Highland, limited-edition Heather Rose and commemorative Homecoming 2014. These are all necessarily small batch as Strathearn is billed as a micro-distillery: it has two stills, a 1000-litre wash still and 500-litre spirit still (compared to, say, Glenlivet's four wash stills, each with 15,000 litre capacity, and four 10,000 litre spirit stills). The distillery's first bottlings have a scheduled release date of September 2016, and will include both peated and unpeated whiskies. In the meantime, another of their diversification strategies means you can try making your own gin (which takes one day) and whisky (one, three or five days), or distillery tours run regularly (pre-booking required). Buy their gins from Forfar or Perth farmers' markets, from the Green Welly Stop, or from online shops including Royal Mile Whiskies.

The Larder

Included in our Larder listings – order print copies of our national (pub. 2010) and regional guides.

Strathearn Distillery is Scotland's smallest distillery. Opened in August 2013, they produce a range of flavoured gins, whisky and other spirits. Buy your own cask of whisky – stored here for three years then bottled for you. Or try an experience day: come and make gin (half day or full day) or whisky (one, three or five days). Come and look round – tours are £7.50 and as they are so small, it is best to book to avoid disappointment.
