Bridgewater Hall was built to answer the need for a major music venue in Manchester, the aging Free Trade Hall having been sold to developers, and its bold modernist design has already acquired iconic status. The building rests on thousands of steel springs, insulating it from noise and vibration. The main auditorium seats nearly 2,400 people and is centred around the spectacular Marcussen & Son pipe organ. The Hall hosts classical concerts by UK and international artists, as well as other musical performances. In recognition of its contribution to Manchester city centre, the Hall received a Civic Trust award in 1998.
The nearest railway stations are at Deansgate and Oxford Road, and the nearest Metrolink stations are Deansgate–Castlefield and St Peter's Square.
The Bridgewater Hall is Manchester's international concert venue, built to give the best possible space for music. The Hall hosts over 250 performances a year including classical music, rock, pop, jazz and world music. The Bridgewater Hall's magnificent Marcussen pipe organ is a focal point and dominates the 2,400 seat auditorium, completely covering the rear wall with a beautiful blend of wood and burnished metal. It was the largest instrument of its kind to be installed in Britain for almost a century and is the jewel in the crown of one of Europe's finest concert halls.
The Hall is home to three resident orchestras: the Hallé, the BBC Philharmonic and Manchester Camerata. The Hall also programmes its own classical music season, the International Concert Series and works with a range of promoters and charity hirers on other programming.
The construction of The Bridgewater Hall was funded in partnership by Manchester City Council and Manchester Development Corporation with assistance from the European Regional Development Fund.
The ongoing operation of the Hall is now the responsibility of an independent charitable trust, Manchester Concert Hall Limited. The Bridgewater Hall is managed by SMG Europe Holdings Limited, one of the world’s largest international venue operators.
