Theatre Royal

This Grade I Listed theatre moved to it's present site in 1837, however the original interior was destroyed by fire in 1899. The auditorium was remodeled by architect Frank Matcham, reopening in 1901 and benefited from a restoration in 2011.

Over the years many of the world's most famous stage actors have performed at the Theatre Royal including Laurence Olivier, Judy Dench, Orson Welles, Charlton Heston and Ian McKellen. It is the northern home of the Royal Shakespeare Company, Opera North, the National Theatre, and the Rambert Dance Company and an audience of over 400,000 theatre goers a year.

The Theatre Royal is only ten minutes walk from Newcastle Central Station and Haymarket Bus Station, or less than one minutes walk from Monument Metro Station.
