The Grand Theatre & Opera House is a Leeds institution. Opening in 1878, it was originally intended as an upmarket rebuke to the scuzzy music halls that then dominated Leeds night life, to the point where only those with the best seats were allowed to come in through the main entrance. The music halls have gone and the Grand Theatre has long since democratised itself, providing a classy venue for the people of Leeds to see major touring shows, opera, musicals, dance, stand-up comedy and classical concerts.
The splendid Victorian building is Grade II listed but in 2005-6 it went through a major refurbishment and now has improved technical facilities and a new performance space, the Howard Assembly Room. It's also the home of Opera North, and Northern Ballet are frequent guests in the building.
