The St James is the West End's newest theatre by some distance, opening in 2012 on the site of the Westminster Theatre, which had been almost destroyed by fire. The St James was designed to meet the need for a theatre in the district that could house smaller, more off-Broadway-scaled productions; it has a 312-seat theatre and 100-seat studio space. Food and drink are available from the Carrara Brasserie, offering pre- and post-show dining; the St James Bar, and on selected performance nights, the Studio Bar.

In keeping with the theatre's scale, shows on the main stage tend to have relatively limited runs; previous successes includ Tell Me On A Sunday and the hit Urinetown. The studio offers an ever-changing lineup of cabaret, theatre, comedy and jazz.

The nearest Tube and surface rail station is Victoria. The theatre is served by bus routes 16, 38, 52, 73, 82, 42 and 148.
