Shakespeare's Globe Theatre

Shakespeare's Globe is on the bank of Thames. The theatre has 2 performance spaces. Mark Rylance was appointed first Director in 1995, and it opened in 1997.

The main auditorium seats 850 on benches with a further 700 standing positions.

The Sam Wanamaker Playhouse opened in January 2014 and is a smaller, candle lit space, as in 17th Century London.

The Sackler Studios provide rehearsal space.

The building is based on a 16th century Elizabethan playhouse with William Shakespeare associations which was twice built and twice destroyed between 1599 and 1644.
