The Garrick opened in 1889 with financial help from none other than WS Gilbert, which makes it appropriate that for much of its long life it's been associated with comedy. It was given Grade II list status in 1960 and was thoroughly renovated between 1986 and 1997. In 2005 it was acquired by Nimax Theatres.
