Opera House & Winter Gardens
The Winter Gardens were built in 1878 as the Victorian equivalent of a multiplex, offering numerous performance venues all under one roof – the one thing conspicuously lacking is an actual garden. The Opera House is one of the largest in Britain, with a capacity not far short of 3,000, and its stage has been trod by everyone from Arthur Askey and Alma Cogan to Lady Gaga and Miley Cyrus, although it now mostly hosts touring West End shows. Other spaces in the venue are open to events of different sizes; the Empress Ballroom is the home of World Matchplay Darts.
Blackpool North station is ten minutes away on foot, and the complex's nearest bus stops are served by the 10, 14, 22 and 22X buses.
- Open since: 1878
