Designed by Frank Matcham and opened in December 1912, when it was opened this Grade II listed building featured a 450,000 litre water tank at the front of the stage. The theatre survived World War II but, less than three years after it ended, a fire destroyed the stage. Its rebuilt stage is now one of the largest outside London.
