The Savoy Theatre & Cinema

The oldest theatre in Wales, driven by a team of enthusiasts and volunteers who lease the Savoy from the MacTaggart family. It's had many names over the years at one point functioned as a roller skating rink with films screened between sessions. The venue offers a programme of live entertainment including musicals, stand-up comedy and tribute shows. It is also home to a cinema showing current releases, event cinema and family matinees at the weekends.

  • Directed by: Ridley Scott
  • Cast: Michelle Williams, Christopher Plummer, Mark Wahlberg, Charlie Plummer
  • UK release: 5 January 2018

The story of the kidnapping of the grandson of miserly industrialist J Paul Getty (Plummer). Plummer, who was a last-minute replacement for the now-disgraced Kevin Spacey, brings understated gravitas and Williams is noble and credible as the kidnap victim’s mother Gail. A sometimes blood-boiling morality tale, pulled off…

Book Club

  • Cast: Diane Keaton, Jane Fonda, Candice Bergen, Mary Steenburgen

Four women (Keaton, Fonda, Bergen and Steenburgen) form a book club to read Fifty Shades of Grey, and in so doing reassess their lives. Irresistibly cheeky and shamelessly cheesy ensemble drama in which older women are placed in the centre of the action, with a torrent of innuendo delivered with relish by a superior cast.

  • UK release: 20 April 2018

Funny Cow (Peake) is a northern woman who takes to stand-up comedy in the 70s and 80s. The film foregrounds the pain and suffering involved, from her abusive husband Bob (Pitts, also the screenwriter) and the grim reality of working men’s clubs. A fine supporting cast is largely wasted, but a great soundtrack and Peake’s…

  • UK release: 15 June 2018

The tale of the last days of Oscar Wilde (Everett), as he lives out his post-prison existence in France and Italy. If Firth and Watson are underused as pal Reggie Turner and wife Constance, they’re well-cast, and Everett himself, in his accomplished directorial debut, is sensational as the fallen star. A surprising and…

In this sequel to the 2004 original, Supers are still forbidden but Elastigirl (Hunter) gets to go up against a supervillain while husband Bob (Nelson) minds the kids. It looks great and the voice cast is excellent, but it feels dated and the set-pieces become tiring.

Young vampire Rudolph (Hardiker) befriends a young boy (Saville) on holiday in the Black Forest. Animated remake (yes, that’s a thing) of a 2000 live action movie based on a beloved children’s book; tame and square, with trite life lessons about putting aside differences, it’s not even as good as Hotel Frankenstein.

  • UK release: 18 June 2018

Debbie Ocean (Bullock) sets in motion a plan to swipe a precious diamond necklace, and with pal Lou (Blanchett) puts together a gang of female crooks. The performances are great fun but Ross’s anonymous direction doesn’t add much, and it’s a bit let down by a needless subplot and unnecessary cameos.

Ralph Maitland (Hurt) is a celebrated screenwriter coming to terms with his impending death, who receives a visit from his son Michael (Brown) and Michael’s girlfriend (Richards).
