The Savoy Theatre & Cinema

The oldest theatre in Wales, driven by a team of enthusiasts and volunteers who lease the Savoy from the MacTaggart family. It's had many names over the years at one point functioned as a roller skating rink with films screened between sessions. The venue offers a programme of live entertainment including musicals, stand-up comedy and tribute shows. It is also home to a cinema showing current releases, event cinema and family matinees at the weekends.

Darkest Hour

  • 4 stars
  • 2017
  • UK
  • 1h 54min
  • Directed by: Joe Wright
  • Cast: Gary Oldman, Kristin Scott Thomas, Ben Mendlesohn, Ronald Pickup
  • UK release: 12 January 2018

May 1940: the situation in Europe is worsening, and Britain needs a new prime minister. The latest in a very long line of recent Churchill performances is by far the best: Oldman is virtually unrecognisable and attacks the part with relish, with Scott Thomas excellent as his wife Clemmie. It may veer into hero worship but…

Ferdinand

  • 3 stars
  • 2017
  • USA
  • Directed by: Carlos Saldanha
  • Written by: Munro Leaf
  • Cast: Kate McKinnon, David Tennant, Bobby Cannavale
  • UK release: 9 December 2017

Ferdinand (Cena) is a Spanish bull who prefers sniffing flowers to staring down bullfighters; shipped off to a farm, he has to escape both the slaughterhouse and the ring. Amiable animation which, although funny, is too overcrowded and unfocused to be really satisfying.

London, 1978: young actor Peter Turner (Bell) meets and falls in love with 50s film star Gloria Grahame (Bening). Sensitively adapted from Turner’s own memoir, it features a luminous performance from Bening as the faded star and moves with wonderful fluidity from the present to flashbacks. A lovely celebration of a unique…

Moonee (Prince) is a six-year-old being raised by her trash-talking mom in a motel near Florida’s Disney World, where she and her pal Scooty (Riviera) terrorise guests at a neighbouring establishment. • UK release: 10 November 2017

Paddington (Whishaw) falls foul of a dastardly scheme to steal the key to a hidden fortune. The sequel to the wildly successful first film is implausibly even better, with spiffing action pieces, seemingly throwaway gags paying rich dividends later, and splendid performances from all, with Grant brilliant as the has-been…
