Tennent Caledonian Breweries

Produced since 1885 at Glasgow’s Wellpark Brewery, on the banks of the Molendinar Burn, Tennent’s lager is by far the biggest-selling lager in the Scottish market. Beer has been made on the site since 1556, making it Glasgow’s longest continually active business spot; H&R Tennent established their brewery in 1740 (known back then as the Drygate Brewery). Tennent’s were originally known for their stout and strong export ales, before concentrating on the lighter stuff – in more ways than one. The lager cans were once famous for being printed with photos of pretty girls, or ‘lager lovelies’, and have become a sought-after collectors’ item since the design was discontinued in 1989. Tennent’s now brew the ubiquitous lager at 4% ABV, Tennent’s Original Export, which uses a different malt, Special (3.5%), Light Ale (3.1%) and the knock-out Super, a can of which, at 9%, contains 4.5 units. The recent launch of Caledonia Best took them into ale territory and some break-away branding, as well as the creation of the Seed Fund, which supports Scottish brewing and farming – 5p of every pint of Best goes into the fund. They’ve been something of a trailblazing company: the first to brew lager in the UK, the first to bring out draught lager in 1924, the first canned lager in 1935 and the first keg lager in 1963. In spring 2014 Drygate Brewing Co opened up next door to Wellpark, a collaboration between Tennent's and craft brewers Williams Bros that includes an experimental brewery, bar and restaurant V @ Drygate (V for Vintage, the successful Edinburgh bar), events space, a beer hall and a brew-your-own studio kit for hands-on involvement. The Wellpark visitors' centre offers tours (£7.50pp - book in advance or walk in), a history of the company and has a merchandise shop.
