Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2016/17 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).

This review is taken from the current (2016) edition.

With live music every night, regular sponsorship of local university sport teams, lots of student-focused nights, a reliable pint of Guinness and a good value bar menu, it’s safe to say the craic is strong in this one. Sure, Malone’s is far from sophisticated – in fact, in terms of décor it’s a little rough round the edges – but they know what they’re doing and they do it well. The huge bar really comes to life during big sporting fixtures, when rugby as well as Gaelic football and hurling draw in the crowds, but there’s always a genuine welcome from the friendly bar staff who take their responsibilities towards the younger drinking crowd seriously. Food-wise, the focus is on burgers, nachos and sharing platters but there’s also Irish soda bread to accompany the soup and a slow-cooked Irish stew for those craving a more traditional taste of home.

  • High point: Genuinely friendly welcome
  • Low point: It could do with a freshen-up
  • Notable dish: Irish stew
  • Provides: Children's portions, Children's high chairs, Outdoor tables, Free wi-fi
  • Music on stereo: Club tracks
  • Live entertainment: Live music every night
  • Capacity: 364
  • Largest group: 300
  • Open since: 2009
  • Number of wines sold by the glass: 5
  • House wine: £12.50 per bottle

The best Irish pub in Edinburgh and one of THE best pubs in Scotland overall.. Good selection of beers, wines and spirits, lovely, fresh food, authentic Irish decor and surroundings which add to the terrific atmosphere. No beer garden other than a few seats outside, but who cares? Above all, staff are friendly and helpful and it isn't too pricey. Shows a lot of sports and has some great live acts on at night, bands and singers, also hosts regular Ceilidhs and the occasional BIG gig by famous artists. My personal favourites are the draught Budweiser and the mega breakfasts and tidy burgers, mmmm. More than just a pub, it's a hub, where staff treat you like one of the family or a long lost friend, in contrast to some other establishments. Even the bouncers are nice. Excellent wheelchair access. All in all, a gem of a pub.

malones is brilliant! a lovely lively place with great food and better craic. drinks are well priced and there are excellent student offers especially with a snapfax. they organise many fun nights which are very popular across a wide age range. highly recommended.

This is a great place to come in and have a pint with your friends and have a bite to eat. The food is always extremely delicious! I usually go for the breakfast salad which is essentially your classic hearty breakfast (bacon, black pudding, poached egg etc) and some salad leaves and tomatoes. Ingenious!
They had a live band playing when I was there and everyone seemed to be having such fun. The atmosphere is great and the staff is very friendly. I would definitely go back again.
