I was in on Tues nite for the first time great atmosphere and even joined in with the band and played the drums to Fleetwood Mac had a great nite.
I was having a drink there and I tapped one of the bar staff on the shoulder to ask when they closing. The bargirl just looked at me and then kept walking. The fat bouncer with long hair and glasses then came up and said I need to leave because he's had complaints about me tapping girls on the shoulder. I was shocked. I've never been asked to leave a place in all my life. I would not recommend going there when they treat customers like that.
Being going to box regularly for years and although there are occasionally fairly poor bands on show it's still my favourite bar/venue/whatever in town. The music overall though is about as varied as you get. Indie (not just the boring firewater type stuff), hip hop, funk, motown, electro, emo and just about anything else you can imagine.
The booze is fairly cheap, good atmosphere and never had a problem with the staff. It's also a fairly mixed crowd and isn't just full of arty farty types trying to look cool in their granny's cardigans.
Perfect place if you want to have a fun night, usually involving a lot of alcohol and plenty of jumping around like a fanny. Doesn't usually get busy 'til later on at night.
Box has been my regular boozer since before it even became Box, and its never been better. As a musician that's played there countless times over the years I can vouch for the current Gibby the sound guy as being one of the best out there, and despite what some people are saying, I've never met a bouncer there that was a prick either, (well maybe one, but he got sacked) and never seen anyone get flung out that wasn't being a prick themselves. The long term staff are all legends and properly look after their customers, especially their regulars. Box also has a musical community like no other pub I've ever been to, it is regularly frequented by all sorts of bands who rather than have the usual competitive attitude and dislike towards each other, they mingle and jam regularly together in Box, the Blues Jams on a Sunday night is a perfect example of that, usually the stage see's members of various bands playing together and encouraging musical customers to come up and jam with them. There hasn't been a musical community like Box's since Ronnie Scotts seen Hendrix jam with Cream.
PS - The manager Scott makes for a very convincing woman in the right clothes.
Nice place! been going for years and all the staff are friendly and look after you! White russians are amazing and only 2 qwid! Best nights are the open mic and ross clark on a Monday!
moan the box!
This bar is extremely underrated. With great live entertainment on every night, and it is all for free. Attractive bar staff and cheap drinks, and some of the top names in the glasgow music scene playing on weekly basis including Ross Leighton, Callum Wiseman, Stewart Brock, and Ross Clark! Very unfair reviews below
The experience of close friend who attended this venue was very unpleasant. She was hassled by a member of a band playing in the club but was subsequently ejected by management along with a guy who supported her for complaining. Management obviously more concerned about protecting the band and revenue than for the personal safety of female customers. So much for customer relations!!!!
This place is truly horrible.
Do not go, I did and ended up in hospital due to inept over zealous stewards.
