CC Blooms

Definitive, well-loved Edinburgh gay nightclub with a comfortable non-exclusive café-bar upstairs.

Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2019/20 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).

The city’s definitive and best-loved gay nightclub for many years, these days CC Blooms concentrates its late-night clubbing operation to Lab, the basement dancefloor space. That means the light-filled, high-ceilinged ground floor level can be put to another use. Open all day and evening, it pitches itself as a non-exclusive café, a relaxed and spacious place to grab a bar meal, and a drinking bar for later in the evening. The menu is varied and filled with favourites, including burgers served in a brioche bun with a large gherkin, potato wedges or curly fries. There are also sharing plates, all-day breakfasts, salads and pub classics plus menus for children and pre-theatre diners too (after all, the Playhouse is only a couple of doors away). The cocktails and coffees are pretty good too.

  • High point: Something for everyone, all day long
  • Low point: Later weekend dining may be a bit lively for some
  • Notable dish: steak, mushroom and Irish stout pie
  • Average price: £13 (lunch); £13 (dinner)
  • Provides: Vegetarian options (at least ¼ main courses), Children's portions, Pre-theatre menu, Outdoor tables, Free wi-fi
  • Live entertainment: Drag shows Church of High Kicks (Sun) and Rabbit Hole (Tue).
  • Capacity: 50 (40 outdoors)
  • Largest group: 15
  • Open since: 1994 approx (2010 under current owner)
  • Number of wines sold by the glass: 16
  • House wine: £16 per bottle

Legendary Edinburgh gay club re-launches with day-time cafe/bar

CC Blooms has been part of the furniture of Edinburgh nights out for as long as most of us can remember. Born in the early 90s as a wonderfully cheesy gay club, the venue recently came under new management and last month reopened following a brief…

I’ve visited many gay venues both nationally and globally and this, by far, had to be the most rude experience I’ve ever come across. After travelling all the way up for the other end of the country to visit what I had heard as ‘one of the best gay venues’ in Edinburgh, upon approaching said venue, we were greeted by a very abrupt and rude doorman who instantly took a disliking to me and my 2 friends and stated “not tonight lads” Now, i can understand that large groups of men can be intimidating especially when rowdy or already drunk, but we were 3 well dressed and sober guys who couldn’t understand the instant dislike. I asked the bouncer what the problem was and stated that we’d just spent 8 hours travelling to get here. He abruptly stated that we were “too drunk” and “did we realise this was a gay venue” again I stated that we had travelled 8 hours to get to where we were stood and hadn’t had a single drink. I’m fully aware that door staff have decision over entry and this cannot be appealed, but asked if he could reconsider, again rudely and abruptly he stated “you need to move on now lads before you start causing more trouble”. After speaking to other door staff at other venues last night and realising that this isn’t the first or the last time they’ve heard of this happening and what seems to be a common practice, I think that’s is a shame that this hasn’t been dealt with and addressed. What is supposed to be a place for people to come and feel part of the community, seems to be based off a bouncer’s opinion with obvious control issue’s.
