We visited last year (2012) and again yesterday (2013). We wanted afternoon tea last year but the chef was (we were told) exhausted after a long day making them, so we were refused that, even though well within the set time and the place was not exactly busy. We buckled down and ordered a sharing platter and a mini bottle of champagne each. They were delicious, but I felt then the service was not great. Also, Signet Library, who's in charge of the fixture & fittings? I noticed a patch of peeling paint on the ceiling in one of the oval lozenges. Yesterday my friend & I, along with a couple from California, sat at same table as the year before. The paint is still peeling! Now Californians know good service, so we were embarrassed by what we got here. This time we had our afternoon tea, shared between three of us. We opted for the one which comes with a glass of champagne. I have to say, miniscule for the price. And when the menu says the afternoon tea is served with a selection of teas or coffee, I really do expect to be asked what sort of tea I want and be served it along with our scones, not to have to chase up the waitress to ask if it's possible to have tea as well. So we were waiting for 10 minutes or so, with half eaten food. Plus we had to ask for more jam as the pot for three people was the size of a two pence piece and not much taller. All in all: food & champagne fine, when you get it, surroundings lovely although could be better maintained, but it's very expensive for what you get and service is not up to snuff. The staff looked lost, if polite and smiling.
