Restored and expanded 14th-century castle with Arts and Crafts flourishes and beautiful gardens.
Restored by the Lorimer family in the late 1800s and now in the care of the National Trust for Scotland, Kellie Castle and Garden has plenty to keep the visitor occupied. It has lavish interiors, painted panelling and Robert Lorimer-designed furniture and sculpture as well as extensive gardens and woodlands. Guided tours shed light on the castle’s long history and the lives of its residents. Particular highlights among its many charms are the spectacular plasterwork library ceiling, a Phoebe Anna Traquair mural and the arts and crafts walled garden. Sadly the age and design of the castle means that disabled access is limited to the garden and tearoom.
Kellie Castle in Fife dates from as early as the 14th century and has magnificent plaster ceilings, painted panelling and fine furniture designed by Sir Robert Lorimer. The grounds and garden could easily be a day out in themselves, with acres of woodland walks, a bird hide and an abundance of nature. The Arts & Crafts garden is packed with beautiful borders of old-fashioned roses and herbaceous plants, as well as fruit and vegetables – all grown organically.

Fife's historic houses have organic kitchen gardens and orchards
‘There used to be six or seven thousand different varieties of apple native to Britain. Now there are only around two thousand.’ As Kellie Castle’s Head Gardener, Mark Armour maintains its fully organic, traditional walled kitchen garden.
