Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2015/16 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).

This review is taken from the current (2015) edition.

Setting the standard for twee cool, the Tearooms deliver the plus-size portions that the associated bar-bistro beneath is known for. With classic films, floral crockery and wooden interiors, the atmosphere is that of an elegant coffee morning, but the food is fit for lumberjacks. While the menu is not entirely in the bar's trademark comedy discourse, hints of humour indicate that it doesn’t take itself too seriously – ye olde Scottish porridge, a wrap with ‘butterynutter squash’, and salads, ie ‘nae bread’. The early evening high tea is traditional – lightly battered fish with chunky skin-on chips and hammy mushy peas, seriously retro gammon steak with a fried egg and a baked pineapple chunk. Accompanied by bread and butter, a pot of tea, and followed by huge wedges of cake, this is a winning combination that makes you wonder why every tea isn’t a high tea.

  • High point: Great character and quality food
  • Low point: Limited evening menu
  • Notable dish: Beer battered fish and chips

I booked a private room for myself and friends so I could celebrate my 30th Birthday, initial correspondence between myself and Gillian at The Tea Rooms was brilliant - she sent over photographs of the private room and a detailed menu.

When I arrived I was blown away with how beautiful the room looked and for me the gluten free options that were available on the menu. A delicious afternoon Tea was served on silver cake stands and washed down with Prosecco, £16 per head was fantastic value for money!!

Thanks to all the staff that helped my day so special!
