Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2016/17 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).

This review is taken from the current (2016) edition.

Visiting the Tearooms is like taking a trip back in time to your granny’s holiday cottage in the Highlands. A cabinet of curiosities, the space is spread over three floors like a layer-cake, with teacups, saucers, floral plates and twee bric-à-brac adorning the tables, walls and staircases. Like the décor, the food riffs confidently on retro classics – from breakfasts such as kippers on toast, to an afternoon tea menu brimming with both traditional and ‘special sanners’ options, as well as quiche and ploughman’s lunch. In the early evening, try the high tea menu – fish and chips served with mushy peas and chips, gammon steak and fried egg, or sea bass with creamy mash. There’s no shortage of teas either, as well as house-made bakes – like a dense and decadent coffee and hazelnut number and a moist and spongy orange and almond cake.

  • High point: The menu offers many Proustian moments
  • Low point: Finding room for a delicious cake afterwards
  • Notable dish: High tea fish and chips – with a cake

I booked a private room for myself and friends so I could celebrate my 30th Birthday, initial correspondence between myself and Gillian at The Tea Rooms was brilliant - she sent over photographs of the private room and a detailed menu.

When I arrived I was blown away with how beautiful the room looked and for me the gluten free options that were available on the menu. A delicious afternoon Tea was served on silver cake stands and washed down with Prosecco, £16 per head was fantastic value for money!!

Thanks to all the staff that helped my day so special!
