Book Launch: Dr Malcolm Alexander - Close To Where The Heart Gives Out
Join Dr Malcolm Alexander for an evening to celebrate publication of Close to Where the Heart Gives Out: A Year in the Life of an Orkney Doctor, a book charting Alexander’s journey from suburban Glasgow to moving his family to the wild and remote landscape of Eday - part of the Orkney archipelago, with a population of 125.
Adjusting to a rural life without modern conveniences - including the challenges of ever-changing weather and extreme winters - while providing medical care to the local population with limited resources, Malcolm gives an unflinchingly honest, funny and deeply moving account of island life. Brooding and beautifully written, it perfectly captures the rhythms of the seasons and the unforgiving yet contemplative days amid Orkney’s landscape.
Malcolm has earned advance praise so far from Matt Gaw, author of The Pull of the River (“grounding and immensely heart-warming. He is to GP’s what James Herriot is to vets”), and Ruth Hogan (“beautifully written and completely unforgettable”).
Dr Malcolm Alexander graduated from Edinburgh University in 1980 with the single thought of becoming a General Practitioner. In his thirties, Malcolm gave up his job in suburban Glasgow when he saw the job advert ‘urgent: island doctor needed’. He applied immediately. Becoming Medical Director for Orkney Health Board, he finished his career working for 14 years as Associate Medical Director for the Scottish National Telephone Triage service, NHS 24, before finally returning to face-to- face practice on the Scottish island of Bute where he now lives.
