No spoilers here for season one as we look ahead to the show's return
It's been more than a year since HBO launched Westworld the TV series: a reboot/reimagining of the late Michael Crichton's solidly entertaining 1973 sci-fi thriller.
In Crichton's original film, a Wild West theme park is populated with robots that go haywire and start killing the guests (a plot that Crichton later iterated into his novel Jurassic Park, itself subsequently adapted into a global box office-storming film franchise).
The TV series features a much broader scope than the original film, mainly focusing on the perspective of the park's host robots as they gain sentience and start to rebel against the humans operating the park. It explores themes of artificial intelligence and theology in a similar manner to Ronald D Moore's re-imagining of Battlestar Galactica, with added inspiration from video games such as Bioshock Infinite, Red Dead Redemption and Grand Theft Auto.
Created by husband-and-wife team Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy, Westworld was nominated for 22 Emmy Awards last year, a particularly impressive feat for a sci-fi show.
When is Westworld Season 2 released?
Jeffrey Wright (Bernard) may have let the cat out the bag when he posted on Instagram: 'Pretty cool. I've spent so much time inside #Westworld these past 6 months this feels like a self-portrait. 3 days of filming left, and then we're circling back online this April....hard.' He later edited 'April' to 'Spring'. HBO confirmed last year the show would return this spring, and if they want to be eligible for another shot at the Emmys then they'll need to air at least five episodes before 31 May. Our best bet is late April, traditionally the month HBO would debut new seasons of Game of Thrones, and with the biggest show on earth off air until 2019 (*sob*), Westworld should slide into the schedule handily. The question is whether it'll receive a day and date release on Sky Atlantic, or Brit fans will be forced to endure a week episode lag (or worse, God forbid).
How can I watch Westworld in the UK?
Westworld will air on Sky Atlantic, with episodes available to non-Sky subscribers through their Now TV app.
Is there a trailer for Westworld Season 2 yet?
Yes, it debuted at Comic Con last year, and it's awesome.
