No spoilers here for season one as we look ahead to the show's return
It's been more than a year since HBO launched Westworld the TV series: a reboot/reimagining of the late Michael Crichton's solidly entertaining 1973 sci-fi thriller.
In Crichton's original film, a Wild West theme park is populated with robots that go haywire and start killing the guests (a plot that Crichton later iterated into his novel Jurassic Park, itself subsequently adapted into a global box office-storming film franchise).
The TV series features a much broader scope than the original film, mainly focusing on the perspective of the park's host robots as they gain sentience and start to rebel against the humans operating the park. It explores themes of artificial intelligence and theology in a similar manner to Ronald D Moore's re-imagining of Battlestar Galactica, with added inspiration from video games such as Bioshock Infinite, Red Dead Redemption and Grand Theft Auto.
Created by husband-and-wife team Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy, Westworld was nominated for 22 Emmy Awards last year, a particularly impressive feat for a sci-fi show.
