Arthur Christmas

Festive favourites and new content, including Arthur Christmas, Miracle on 34th Street, Love Actually, BoJack Horseman, Krampus and Bill Murray (twice)

There's nothing like gathering round the telly box in December and settling down for a good ol' Christmas movie. It's the season where you can cope with syrupy sentimentality and the endless comforting repetition of traditional festive favourites. And Netflix has plenty of classics in their back catalogue plus a selection of recent additions and brand new content – here are some of our favourites.

Arthur Christmas (2011)
While it might not be the claymation that Aardman Animation is famous for, this charming CGI adventure finds Santa's bumbling son (voiced by James McAvoy) on a mission to save Christmas and deliver one last present.

Blackadder's A Christmas Carol (1998)
Set between Blackadder the The Third and Blackadder Goes Fourth, this one off comedy inverts Charles Dickens' classic Christmas ghost story, starring Rowan Atkinson as Ebenezer Blackadder.

BoJack Horseman: Sabrina's Christmas Wish (2014)
A suitably meta Christmas special from the animated equine actor, as BoJack and Todd settle down to watch an old Xmas episode of Horsin' Around.

El Camino Christmas (2017)
Kooky comedy as a young man's attempt to meet his real father turns into a Christmas siege at a convenience store. Starring Luke Grimes, Vincent D'Onofrio, Jessica Alba, Dax Shepard and Tim Allen. From 8 Dec.

Jingle All the Way (1996)
Arnie goes family friendly as a father fighting tooth and claw to secure this year's must-have gift for his son.

Krampus (2015)
Top notch Christmas horror film with a comedic twist (think Gremlins), as a young boy inadvertently summons a Christmas demon. Not to be confused with the inferior Krampus: The Christmas Devil which is also available on Netflix. From 25 Dec.

Love Actually (2003)
Here's the thing: Richard Curtis' Love Actually is actually a bit rubbish. But it is Christmassy and lots of people really seem to like this rag tag bunch of soppy love stories.
From 14 Dec.

Miracle on 34th Street (1994)
Courtroom drama with a sprinkle of Christmas magic, as a little girl tries to prove a friendly old man (Richard Attenborough) really is Santa.

The Night Before (2015)
Riotous comedy as three childhood friends (Seth Rogen, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Anthony Mackie) head out on one last drink and drug fuelled blow out for Christmas Eve.

The Royle Family Christmas Special (2000)
Art imitates life as the Royles sit around watching telly on Christmas day. Another slice of domestic comedy genius from Caroline Aherne.

Scrooged! (1998)
Bill Murray stars as a selfish TV exec in a very 80s and very funny take on Dickens' Christmas Carol.

A Very Murray Christmas (2015)
Bill Murray (again) prepares for his very own Christmas special with gags, songs and some very famous friends, including George Clooney, Chris Rock, Miley Cyrus, Amy Poehler and Rashida Jones.
