Set in 1980s Australia, the show tells the tale of a competitive ballroom dancer, and features songs by John Paul Young, Doris Day and Cyndi Lauper
Baz Luhrmann's musical, based on his play and hit movie of the same name, opens at the Piccadilly Theatre on Fri 16 Mar, fresh from a successful run at Leeds' West Yorkshire Playhouse last year.
Strictly Ballroom tells the story of Scott, a competitive ballroom dancer whose unconventional methods and routines draw attention in 1980s Australia. It's a tale about being true to yourself that's adored by millions.
The show features memorable songs from the 1992 film, including John Paul Young's 'Love Is In The Air', Doris Day's 'Perhaps Perhaps Perhaps, and Cyndi Lauper's 'Time After Time'.
Strictly Ballroom was the first of Luhrmann's Red Curtain Trilogy of films, followed by Romeo and Juliet and Moulin Rouge. Luhrmann was praised for his theatrical vision, and Strictly Ballroom (his first film in the director's chair) became the highest grossing movie in Australian history.
The Piccadilly Theatre run will be directed and choreographed by Drew McOnie (Jesus Christ Superstar, The Lorax). The full cast is still to be announced.
