George Michael's festival donation
George Michael has made a large donation to a local festival.
The singer gave a "wonderfully generous" sum to the Hampstead and Highgate Festival, which takes place close to George's home in Hampstead, North London, after festival co-organiser Christina Nolan asked if he would consider donating any money.
She said: "We asked - George is a very generous man. There was a mutual friend who intervened for us and he said he didn't mind helping.
"This is the first time he's sponsored the festival but once we were able to tell people he'd helped, I kept hearing from other groups that he had been very generous to them too."
Another organiser, Jane Hamilton, said the donation would help make the festival the "biggest and best" yet.
She said: "George Michael's donation has allowed the festival to be the biggest and best yet and is a wonderfully generous gesture from one of Highgate's most famous residents.
"Everyone involved in the festival is very grateful to him and his generosity will make the day extra special for everyone in Highgate."
The event takes place this weekend.
