As trailer premieres, we rundown everything you need to know about Marvel's The Defenders

The who, what, where and when of Netflix's new superteam starring Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist

Netflix and Marvel have been building to their big superhero team up since they first joined forces. You can watch Daredevil (Charlie Cox), Jessica Jones (Krysten Ritter), Luke Cage (Mike Colter) and Iron Fist (Finn Jones) take on Sigourney Weaver (as villain Alexandra) on Netflix from Friday 18 August 2017 when all eight episodes will be available.

But who are The Defenders and what have we learnt from the first full trailer?

Defenders unites Netflix's four heroes to take on a big nasty villain they can't handle on their own. Blind ninja / lawyer Daredevil, super strong Jessica Jones, bullet proof Luke Cage and mystic kung-fu master Iron Fist form the core team. The trailer shows they have a spiky relationship and also gives us a sneak peak of Stick (Scott Glenn) working as their mentor while Rosario Dawson is back as the medic who helps out or injured heroes. And it wouldn't be a Netflix Marvel show without a big corridor fight and the trailer showcases a cool quadruple team up as the foursome take on some ninjas in a confined space.

This is still a bit of a mystery. Sigourney Weaver is the main villain but all we know is she's called Alexandra. Netflix and Marvel are keeping quiet about any direct links to any comics characters but several fan theories have sprung up suggesting she could be an incarnation of the demon Mephisto; head of Hydra, Viper; or they've made crime kingpin Alexander Bont a woman. What we do know for sure is that showrunner Marco Ramirez described her character as an 'utter badass' and there are tons of ninjas in the trailer so evil cult The Hand and assassin Electra look like they play a major role.

In the comics Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist often cross paths, after all they are all superheroes working the streets of New York. In the first series of Netflix's Jessica Jones she hooked up with Cage and we discovered she was directly linked to the death of his wife. In the source material they are even closer and have a kid together. In the comics Cage and Iron Fist have been working as super power double act Heroes for Hire since the 70s. However the actual superteam that Defenders have cribbed their name from is a very different beast, originally featuring Doctor Strange, Hulk, Namor and Silver Surfer. Marvel are launching a new comic series in August to coincide with the TV launch, featuring the same roster as the Netflix show.

Daredevil has already been renewed for a third stand alone series, Jessica Jones will be back for season two in 2018 and Luke Cage is also getting a second series. Interestingly Iron Fist had probably the worst reviews of the original roster, and there is no news of another season as yet, but could he be rolled into Luke Cage's world for a rough take on their Heroes for Hire parnership? Also Punisher (Jon Bernthal) is getting his own spin off, could he be a new recruit for the Defenders when they come together again in the future?
