If you know a bit about Aviemore, you'll know that The Mountain Café is where to find some of the best food in the Cairngorms National Park. Originally from South Island, New Zealand, owner Kirsten Gilmour brings her background as a chef and enthusiasm for Scotland to a wide range of dishes both sweet and savoury, the pick of which are showcased in a new cookbook. Appealingly photographed by Paul Masson, 130 recipes are included such as sloe gin and bramble salmon salad, butternut, chilli and coconut fritters, cardamom oranges and 'Badass brownies', with plenty of info on free-from alternatives.

The Mountain Café Cookbook: A Kiwi in the Cairngorms by Kirsten Gilmour is published in hardback by Kitchen Press Publishing on 14 February 2017, priced at £20.

Like many who visit the Cairngorms, New Zealander Kirsten Gilmour fell for the place and ended up staying, opening up a café around a decade ago that is among the best in the National Park and beyond thanks to great food and a welcoming, laid-back vibe.
