Z: The Beginning of Everything, Sneaky Pete, Falling Water, Black Sails and Embarce fo the Serpent among January highlights on Amazon
Christina Ricci stars as Zelda Sayre Fitzgerald in a dramatization of her life as flapper, author and wife to F Scott Fitzgerald in TV show Z: The Beginning of Everything (27 Jan). It dives into the fascinating life of a woman ahead of her time from 1918 to her untimely death and depicts an artist determined to establish her own identity in the tempestuous wake of a world-famous husband.
Character actress Margot Martindale plays the grandmother of Marius (Giovanni Ribisi) who on his release from prison has to set about paying his debts to a man who is holding his brother hostage in Sneaky Pete (13 Jan). It's created by the team who brought you Justified and also stars Bryan Cranston as a very bad man. Additionally in TV is sci-fi drama Falling Water (15 Jan) which stars David Ajala, Lizzie Brochere and Will Yun Lee as three people who are interconnected via their dreams. It looks a little like Sense8 crossed with Stephen King's Dreamcatcher. You can also catch the fourth and final season of pirate yarn Black Sails (30 Jan).
In film look out for the critically acclaimed Embrace of the Serpent (10 Jan) which takes a haunting and poetic look at the effect on colonialism on the Amazon. Director Ciro Guerra's third feature marked Colombia's first Oscar nomination for best foreign language film. If you're looking for something lighter try romantic comedy The Five-Year Engagement (1 Jan) which stars the fantastic Emily Blunt as a woman who has to keep postponing her wedding due to work commitments and life getting in the way.
