War Horse adds Glasgow run to UK tour
National Theatre's most successful play extends its UK tour into 2019
Award-winning National Theatre production War Horse is coming to Glasgow's SECC in 2019.
War Horse is the National Theatre's most successful production: it has been seen by over seven million people across ten countries and has been honoured with 25 awards to date, including the Tony Award for Best Play on Broadway.
The play first premiered in 2007 and completed its record-breaking eight year London run at the New London Theatre in March 2016. During that time Steven Spielberg released his 2011 film adaption of War Horse, which starred Emily Watson, Peter Mullan, Benedict Cumberbatch and Tom Hiddleston. The theatre production last toured the UK in 2013–14 and is set to start a tour of the UK in September 2017.
Nick Stafford's adaptation of Michael Morpurgo's book War Horse is directed by Marianne Elliott and Tom Morris. The story is set against the backdrop of the First World War and follows the story of a young boy named Albert and his horse Joey. Creating a horse on stage might seem tricky, if you want something more credible that a pantomime horse, but South Africa's Handspring Puppet Company have created a galloping horse on stage.
