New on Netflix UK: December 2016

Barry, Trollhunters, Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency, Anomalisa, Bone Tomahawk and White Girl among December highlights on Netflix

As it comes to the end of Barack Obama's time in the White House as President of the USA, a Netflix original film looks back at his University days in a film simply titled Barry (16 Dec). Set in the early 80s in New York director Vikram Gandhi and writer Adam Mansbach's character study draws parallels with the issues of the era and how they are pertinent to the modern day.

If you're looking to distract yourself from the increasing black hole of bad news that is 2016 then look no further than Trollhunters which appears on 23 December just in time for Christmas Day viewing. Dreamworks and Guillermo Del Toro have teamed up to create an animated fantasy adventure series based on his book of the same title. Kelsey Grammer, Ron Perlman and James Purefoy all voice characters and the late Anton Yelchin provides the voice for Jim Jake Jr.

Samuel Barnett and Elijah Wood star in Max Landis' adaptation of Douglas Adams' Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency (11 Dec). The series follows Dirk and his reluctant sidekick Todd Brotzman as they solve crimes and investigate the interconnectedness of the world.

Star Trek fans should delight in Adam Nimoy's touching tribute to his father, the late, great Leonard Nimoy, For the Love of Spock (1 Dec). This documentary features archival interviews with Nimoy and new interviews with members of the original cast and those involved in the recent film franchise, including Simon Pegg and JJ Abrams. Also of note in films this month is Charlie Kaufman's Oscar nominated stop-motion masterpiece about a man going through an existential crisis in Anomalisa (11 Dec), Elizabeth Wood's Sundance hit White Girl (1 Dec), Matteo Garone's macabre and stylish triptych of Italian fairy tales Tale of Tales (12 Dec) and S Craig Zahler's brutal horror/western Bone Tomahawk (also 12 Dec) which features top notch performances from Kurt Russell and Richard Jenkins.
