New on Netflix UK: October 2016

Into the Inferno, The 13th, Black Mirror, Mascots and The Witness make up the October highlights on Netflix

Earlier this year Netflix announced four original feature length documentaries that were due to premiere at the Toronto Film Festival including Into the Inferno, which sees enigmatic German director Werner Herzog explore what exactly the brimstone and ash of active volcanoes means to the human race.

While on the subject of brilliant documentaries, Ava DuVernay's The 13th comes to Netflix on 7 October after its world premiere at the New York Film Festival. The title refers to the 13th Amendment to the constitution, which reads: 'Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States.' In her own words, DuVernay states: 'This film was made as an answer to my own questions about how and why we have become the most incarcerated nation in the world, how and why we regard some of our citizens as innately criminal, and how and why good people allow this injustice to happen generation after generation.'

All six episodes of Charlie Brooker's third series of twisted sci-fi Black Mirror will appear only on Netflix on 21 October. The first episode is an 80s-set satire starring MacKenzie Davis and Gugu Mbatha-Raw and the second is directed by Joe Wright, co-written by Rashida Jones and stars Bryce Dallas Howard.

Another couple of Netflix original films to keep your eye out for this month are Christopher Guest's comedy mockumentary Mascots (13 Oct), which casts the camera over a group of amateur sports mascots and features his usual players, Parker Posey, Jane Lynch and Jennifer Coolidge and war thriller The Siege of Jadotville (7 Oct) which stars Jamie Dornan and Mark Strong.

The Witness (1 Oct) is a real crime highlight from first-time director James Solomon that tells the story of Kitty Genovese who was stabbed to death outside her apartment in 1964. Solomon is interested in humanising Kitty and does so by searching behind juicy headlines and following her brother's incredibly moving quest for truth. If you're looking for something a little lighter but equally fantastic then try Gurinder Chadha's (Bend it Like Beckham) coming-of- age comedy Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging (15 Oct) or Lynn Shelton's Laggies, aka Say When (15 Oct), which stars Keira Knightley as a struggling twenty-something who makes friends with a teenager played by Chloe Grace Moretz in an attempt to escape reality for a little bit.
