Controversial director Mel Gibson has branded Ben Affleck and Henry Cavill's 'Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice' as a "a piece of s**t" that cost too much money to make

Mel Gibson thinks 'Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice' was "a piece of s**t".

The straight-talking actor-and-director is shocked that Zack Snyder's blockbuster - starring Ben Affleck and Henry Cavill as the two DC Comics superheroes - cost approximately $250 million to make and was critically mauled.

When discussing the enormous budgets attached to making Marvel Studios and DC Comics movies, he ranted: "What did they spend on 'Batman v Superman' that they're admitting to? And it's a piece of s**t."

The 60-year-old star explained: "I look at them and scratch my head. I'm really baffled by it. I think there's a lot of waste but maybe if I did one of those things with the green screens I'd find out different. I don't know. Maybe they do cost that much. I don't know. It seems to me that you could do it for less ... if you're spending outrageous amounts of money, $180 million or more, I don't know how you make it back after the tax man gets you, and after you give half to the exhibitors."

Gibson received a 10-minute standing ovation at the Venice Film Festival for his comeback movie 'Hacksaw Ridge' starring Andrew Garfield - who ironically rose to fame playing Marvel superhero Spider-Man.

The biographical war movie focuses on conscientious objector Desmond T. Doss - portrayed by Garfield - a Seventh Day Adventist who refused to carry a gun and was awarded the Medal of Honour for his efforts as a combat medic in World War II.

Gibson says his film depicts real life superheroes not ones in "spandex".

Still trying to wrap his head around the idea that comic book movies cost so much to make, he told Deadline: "I'm not interested in the stuff. Do you know what the difference between real superheroes and comic book superheroes is? Real superheroes didn't wear spandex. So I don't know. Spandex must cost a lot."
