Stranger Things

Highlights include Bojack Horseman, Stranger Things, Fargo season 2, Tallulah and Purge: Anarchy

Season 2 of Bojack Horseman excelled in its boldness when calling out hypocrisy in Hollywood. It dedicated an entire episode ('Hank after Dark') to the subject of sexual harassment allegations in the industry and cannily displayed the difference in how victims and the accused are treated by the media. Hopes are extremely high for Season 3 which is available in its entirety on 22 July and sees Bojack campaigning for an Oscar. We are greatly looking forward to seeing which taboo issues will be grappled with by creator Raphael Bob-Waksberg.

Netflix releases a love letter to 80s cult films with the first season of Stranger Things on 15 July. It stars Winona Ryder as a mother desperately searching for her missing son, who uncovers something out of the ordinary. If you missed the second series of Fargo on TV, then you have a chance to catch the show which stars Kirsten Dunst, Patrick Wilson and Jesse Plemons on 13 July.

Tallulah marks another release of a Sundance Film Festival purchase by Netflix and premieres at the end of the month. Directed by Sian Heder, a member of the Orange is the New Black writing team, it reunites Juno stars Ellen Page and Allison Janney in a drama about motherhood.

Elsewhere, Amma Asante’s next film, A United Kingdom, which tells the true story of the marriage of Seretse Khama, King of Bechuanaland and London office worker Ruth Williams in 1947 has just been announced as the opener for the 60th London Film Festival. If you’d like to catch up on Asante’s work her previous film Belle appears on Netflix on 6 July. Gugu Mbatha-Raw turns in an exquisite performance as Dido Elizabeth Belle, the mixed race daughter of a Navy Admiral, whose real life inspired the film.

Also in film, The Purge: Anarchy arrives on Netflix on 17 July to coincide with the third film in the series, The Purge: Election Year which is released on 26 August. If it’s tense horror, you’re after Karyn Kusama’s nail bitingly good The Invitation appears on 8 July. It stars Logan Marshall-Green who pays a visit to his ex-wife’s house for an awkward dinner party. And don’t forget to set your watches for time-travelling mayhem in X-Men: Days of Future Past which appears on 20 July.

And finally, it's time to take a nostalgic trip down to Stars Hollow as from the 1 July seasons 1–7 of Gilmore Girls will be available. This is especially exciting news as Melissa McCarthy has also now been confirmed as returing for the new series which will air later this year.
