'Iron Man 2' director Jon Favreau is returning to the Marvel universe to executive produce 'Avengers: Infinity War'

Jon Favreau is to executive produce 'Avengers: Infinity War'.

The 49-year-old filmmaker - who directed 'Iron Man' and 'Iron Man 2', but turned down the role on the third movie - has revealed he is going to work with Anthony and Joseph Russo on the upcoming two-part film, and is "really excited" about the project.

He said: "I'm going to be executive producing the Avengers films with the Russo brothers, which I'm very excited about.

"I talk to them about it all the time. I've worked both in front of and behind the camera with Marvel and I really love what they're doing right now.

"It's a really exciting time to be over there."

While Favreau, who also executive produced 'The Avengers' and 'Avengers: Age of Ultron', didn't play a part in the upcoming 'Captain America: Civil War' film, he is expecting a positive reaction from fans and is delighted to be back in the Marvel universe.

He added: "I've seen a rough cut of 'Civil War' and it's fantastic.

"We're constantly looking for things to do together. And now I'm freed up."

The 'Jungle Book' director - who has played Happy Hogan in the three 'Iron Man' movies - admitted he decided to step away from the director's chair on 'Iron Man 3' to pursue other opportunities.

He added to Digital Spy: "My time was completely monopolised for those years and I wanted allowed to explore other things.

"Part of the fun of having a successful movie is you get a lot of say on what your next project is.

"Sometimes you want to leave yourself open to other opportunities instead of another four or five years maybe working on that franchise."

Thanos (Brolin) aims to become all-powerful, in the first part of this two-part superhero mash-up. Death, destruction, torture and sacrifice are the order of the day, in a grand space opera that mixes tragedy with pathos, fleshed out with the usual Marvel humour. Truly remarkable.
