Colin Firth would happily wear "a mankini" for a film.

The 54-year-old actor joked he would have no qualms about bearing his buttocks and more in a crotch hugging swimsuit - which became popular after fellow British actor Sacha Baron Cohen donned the one-piece garment in his movie 'Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan' - in the name of art.

When asked about his latest character Max Perkins' dress sense in the forthcoming movie 'Genius', he quipped: "The suit is the costume. I put it on. If someone wants me to wear a mankini in a film, I'm available ... I'm ready to burst out of a cake."

The film is based on Scott Berg's book 'Max Perkins: Editor Of A Genius' and Colin plays the respected editor who embarks on a literary 'bromance' with Jude Law's character Thomas Wolfe.

The plot revolves around the true story of the relationship that developed between the pair, but also depicts other literary giants including 'The Great Gatsby' writer F. Scott Fitzgerald played by Guy Pearce and Ernest Hemingway played by Dominic West .

Nicole Kidman also stars as Wolfe's muse and lover Aline Bernstein in the British-American biographical drama, which has been directed by Michael Grandage.

And Colin added that he thinks Max's familiar suit portrays a certain "repression" in the character.

On a more serious note, he told Deadline: "You'd be surprised how much variation I can find within the confines of a suit ... I find repression really interesting because I think there's an awful lot going on inside there. Mystery is fascinating in all art forms."

'Genius' is set for release on July 29.
