The Mission announce UK tour dates
Veteran gothic rockers celebrate thirty years in broad-brimmed hats
The Mission, Leeds's celebrated gang of goths, are celebrating their 30th anniversary with a tour of the UK and Ireland. The Mission formed in 1985, out of the ashes of fellow goths The Sisters of Mercy. During recording sessions for the Sisters' second album, guitarist Wayne Hussey and bassist Craig Adams decided that their creative differences with singer Andrew Eldritch had got to the point where being in the same time zone as Eldritch was more than they could handle, and the band tore itself apart. (Eldritch subsequently reformulated The Sisters of Mercy, and still tours under that name today.)
Hussey and Adams formed their own band, adding ex-Pulp guitarist Simon Hinkler and drummer Mick Brown of Red Lorry Yellow Lorry. Two albums, a North American tour and a whole lot of drugs later, the band scored its biggest hit with the 'Kashmir'-alike 'Tower of Strength', produced by Zep bassist John Paul Jones, which got to number 12 in the UK charts on the strength of its epic production, big-hearted sentiment and Hussey's wailing vocal. To Hussey must also be given the credit for being the frontman most likely to wear a Stetson and Ray-Bans, back when Bono was sporting one of the most heinous mullets in popular music.
The Mission haven't quite maintained their late-80s popularity, but they've managed to keep themselves more or less intact: many people have passed through over the years, but the current line-up consists of Hussey, Adams, Hinkler and Spear of Destiny's Mike Kelly. Their loyal fans have kept them going, and Hussey is gracious and amusing about 'the support and patronage of our brilliant audience. This celebration is for them as much as it is for our retirement funds.'
