New on Netflix UK: February 2016

Michelle Yeoh in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Sword of Destiny

It’s a strong month for documentaries on Netflix with the Academy Award nominated The Look of Silence premiering on 1 February. Joshua Oppenheimer helmed one of the most important documentaries of modern times with The Act of Killing, which explored the aftermath of murder in Indonesia, and this companion piece is no less powerful. This time Oppenheimer follows optometrist Adi around as he confronts the leaders of death squads about their brutal execution of his brother Ramli in 1965.

Other documentary highlights include Dinosaur 13, about the discovery of the largest Tyrannosaurus Rex fossil and My Beautiful Broken Brain which re-evaluates the human experience and plays with form in an interesting way via exploration of Lotje Sodderland’s mind after a stroke.

Later on in the month a Netflix original series from Judd Apatow takes a look at modern love, and is aptly named Love. Gillian Jacobs (from Community) and Paul Rust take the lead roles in this ten-part comedy. And season two of Better Call Saul premieres on 16 February with a new episode appearing weekly.

And the the month ends with perhaps the highest profile Netflix original feature with martial arts sequel Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Sword of Destiny on 26 February.

James Bobin, Jason Segel and Nicholas Stoller took us all by surprise with their uplifting and hilarious take on The Muppets back in 2011 and though the sequel Muppets Most Wanted doesn’t quite live up to the same fantastic heights it’s still a nifty and entertaining crime caper. Ricky Gervais and Tina Fey star and it will be available on 25 February.

Gaspar Noé’s Love will be available on 18 February and it tells an explicit story of lost love while also charting Noé’s personal journey as firebrand filmmaker, but it lacks emotional depth. The feverish, tangled scenes of real sex are exquisitely crafted but unfortunately the dialogue is naff.

‘Gentlemen you can’t fight in here! This is the War Room’, is one of the sharpest and funniest lines written and it’s delivered perfectly by Peter Sellers in Stanley Kubrick’s Dr Strangelove which appears on 17 February. And with Quentin Tarantino’s The Hateful Eight in (some) cinemas, now is the perfect time to revisit the brutal and bloody Django Unchained which also appears on 17 February.
