Richard Gere has joined the cast of 'The Dinner'.

The 66-year-old actor has got on board the Oren Moverman-directed movie and will join British comedian Steve Coogan, 50, Laura Linney, 51, Rebecca Hall and Chloë Sevigny in the project.

Gere will play a politician called Stan, the older brother of Paul (Coogan).

The plot revolves around Stan and his spouse (Hall being invited to go out for dinner by Paul and his wife Claire (Linney) and tensions that exist between the two siblings coming to the fore.

Smooth-talking Stan is the favourite to win the governor's race at the time of the get-together, while Paul is unemployed and bitter about the direction his life is heading.

Dark secrets are discovered over dinner about their respective children as the evening progresses and it is revealed that a crime has been committed by them collectively, and the couples are split about how best to handle the situation.

The film is based on the worldwide bestselling novel by Herman Koch and has been adapted by Moverman for the big screen.

Speaking about the project, Moverman said: "Herman Koch's 'The Dinner' is an extraordinarily provocative, conscience-bending ride that takes on culturally relevant issues and turns them into an intricate menu of human passions and primal fears. I am honoured to be tackling this international phenomenon as an American film with our family of talented artists and brilliant actors."

Moverman's last film 'Time Out of Mind' starred Gere, while his other work includes the Oscar nominated 'The Messenger' and 'Rampart', which starred Woody Harrelson, Sigourney Weaver, Robin Wright, Ice Cube and Brie Larson.

'The Dinner' will start shooting in New York on January 21.
